WhatsApp No Longer Requires Group Names

WhatsApp groups have been around for a long time, and the feature is pretty straightforward. It’s a standard room with several members who can share text messages, photos, voice notes, and videos. Over the years, WhatsApp’s group chat feature has received several upgrades, including increased member limit and end-to-end encryption. However, the requirement to use and create a group remains the same. Currently, WhatsApp’s users must manually select a name for their group after creating it. However, the Meta-owned messaging platform is changing this basic rule shortly.

The company has already started rolling out a host of other features that have been aimed at managing large group chats effectively. A few days ago, WhatsApp introduced the option to allow users to block specific Admins from being able to send messages in their group. Additionally, it is now possible to add restrictions for new participants while they are creating the group. This will ensure users aren’t added to unnecessary group conversations or groups.

This new restriction will be available for all existing and new groups. To make the best of this new feature, the company recommends that groups be kept to a limited number of members. It also aims to give more power to the admins by letting them prioritize who can join their groups. This will make it easier for them to manage their groups and prevent unwanted entrants.

WhatsApp also makes it easier for users to leave annoying or useless group chats by adding a silent departure mode. Currently, whenever someone leaves a group chat, every member gets notified. This can be irritating and embarrassing for smaller groups and is a privacy concern for larger ones. WhatsApp will soon add the silent leave option so only the admins will be notified.

As part of the upgrade, WhatsApp is also giving group admins more tools so they can control the flow of the conversation. It is now possible for admins to see a list of pending group invites so they can approve them in bulk, which will help reduce the time it takes to approve new members. In addition, the company allows admins to change the group name and profile picture once a member has been added.

The company is also doubling the group chat limit to 1,024 members. This is a big step up from the current cap of 512, putting WhatsApp one step closer to rival Telegram’s 200,000 group chat limit. The increase is being rolled out in the form of a beta update on both Android and iOS. It’s unclear when it will be rolled out to all WhatsApp users. The company is also working on a way to connect multiple groups into a community, which will let them easily share files of up to 2GB in size that are end-to-end encrypted.
