What You Should Expect in Medical School

It is the dream of many students to enroll for studies at a prestigious medical school. After all, this is the first step in the right direction when looking to turn their dream career of offering medical services Singapore into reality. And with the enthusiasm that comes with joining such an institution, many rush through the decision without making ample preparations.

But this should never be the case since you ought to be fully aware of what is bound to come your way the moment you enroll at a medical school. Actually, this is the only way to have a remarkable learning experience and offer the best medical services Singapore once done. To ensure everything works in your favor, here are some of the things to expect in medical school.

What will you learn?

Most medical schools have their training divided into two parts i.e., pre-clinical and clinical. When following the traditional four-rear curriculum, the pre-clinical phase entails two years of training.

During this period, students learn about basic medical concepts, structure and functions of the body, diseases, diagnoses, and treatment concepts. Furthermore, students get to learn the basics of doctoring including taking medical histories.

The last two years of the training cover the clinical part. This involves clinical rotations during which students get basic instructions and hands-on experience with patients in major medical specialties. You should, however, keep in mind that the curriculum tends to vary from one medical school to the other.

Interacting with Patients

While many medical schools wait until the third year before students can start having experiences with patients, this seems to be changing slowly. Some schools introduce patient interactions early on or have the students receive EMT or EMS certification before commencing the classes. Either way, clinical rotations give students firsthand experience on what it takes to work with different patients under direct supervision of a faculty member, resident, or fellow.

Final Thoughts

Knowing what to expect before joining medical school better prepares you for what lies ahead. Keep in mind as a medical school student you are entering a demanding process, but every successful doctor was in your position at some point.

For this reason, you should never allow those anxious feelings to get the better of you as they are normal, temporary and manageable. Nevertheless, the preparations you make speak volumes on whether you will have a remarkable learning experience and successful career once you get started.
