Qualcomm and Apple Seal Extended Chip Licensing Deal Through 2027

And so silently delivers perhaps the industry’s most well-established complex alliances, Qualcomm said Thursday that it has extended its global patent license agreement with Apple. The extension is valid from 1 April 2027 and ensure the two stay linked on the IP front of smartphone connectivity even as Apple pushes ahead to design greater parts of its own.

The news was announced quietly, with no formal financial details disclosed. Qualcomm merely reaffirmed the licensing renewal, accompanied by a prudent statement by John’s Han, executive VP and general manager at Qualcomm Technology Licensing: “We are pleased to extend the Apple license agreement.” No details about duration or royalty terms were provided, leaving most analysts and investors to remember previous deals and speculate.

History is also familiar here. In 2019, the two giants settled a contentious, years-long patent litigation and modem chip providing dispute. As a result, there was a learned remittance from Apple, worldwide patent lawsuits were enjoined, and they voluntarily entered into a six year worldwide patent license agreement that took effect from April 1, 2019. Yet, per the Thursday report, not long after, Apple decided to extend that agreement for a further two years, taking the original date to 31st March 2027. The present announcement starts from here.

For Qualcomm, the licensing side of the business is still a profitable base. Over the past few quarters, that segment has represented approximately 15 percent of total revenue. Over time, those royalty checks are a more reliable source of income than trends in selling physical chips and, what? S more, that revenue is not dependent on whether Apple commissions a Qualcomm modem or not. That crucial difference holds ever greater significance. Apple has spent years refining its own cellular modem technology and has already launched its first in-house chip in a more affordable iPhone. Qualcomm itself has cautioned that revenue connected to Apple hardware is anticipated to fall at a faster rate than previously predicted as the iPhone giant ratchets up its move into custom silicon.

Still, standards are multi-layered and more complicated. Once a company makes its own modem, it still required access to basic patents on 5G etc. and the renewed license ensures that, with the subsequent stream of royalty payments fueling Qualcomm’s broader R&D and drive into fields like data-center computing and AI infrastructure.

The timing of this is interesting. Globally, smartphone growth has largely plateaued, competition in high-end devices fierce, and both companies facing headwinds in supply-chain bottlenecks and target-shifting consumer tastes. Maintaining patent alliance estate removes an avenue for possible friction at a moment when neither side gains from a renewed round of litigation. For Apple, it maintains a lot of leverage over chip technology programs as they work their way through development; for Qualcomm it secures a steady stream of income as sales of its chips to its largest client taper off.

Many in the industry regard the agreement as a pragmatic, not a transformative, move. It does not reverse Apple’s long-term push toward an even more vertically-integrated business, nor offset the loss of the volume of the modem business Qualcomm once had.
