A Simple Guide on Buying the Best Hybrid Camera

Hybrid cameras are becoming popular among photographers, and for good reason. Also known as mirrorless cameras or compact-system cameras, these are compact like a point and shot camera but offer a larger image sensor. And like the more expensive DSRLs on the market, you can change lenses to fit the scene of your shooting.

This is the reason hybrid cameras are a favorite for most professionals. Before heading to the store and ordering one, there are a few things you need to know. Below are some of the most notable ones.

Consider the Image Sensors

To put it plainly, the image sensor is what captures the light from the object you want to shoot. The two main sensors sizes for hybrids are micro four thirds and APS-C. The smaller micro four thirds sensors is great for portability, but can sacrifice some picture quality. On the other hand, the larger APS-C sensor will add bulk, but has the potential to offer better image quality and low-light shooting.

Aside from the size, it is essential that you also factor in the megapixels, or the number of pixels the sensor can capture. Hybrids typically have 14MP to 24MP. For standard size photo printing, any amount will work. If you are printing large posters or doing detailed photo editing, more megapixels would serve you perfectly.

Check the Manual Controls

Both professionals and hobby photographers know the power of manual camera settings. After all, you can tweak your camera for exposure, depth of field, shutter speed and much more to get the perfect shot. If you need fast setting changes, then you certainly want a camera that makes it easy.

For instance, the Samsung NX20 allows you to scroll through settings using the lens manual focus ring. And the shutter button on the Panasonic Lumix has a quick access level that controls aperture and zoom. However, other cameras might burry important settings away where they are harder to access.

Price Matters

Finally, price is another thing that affects the purchase process of your camera. With a wide range of price points and features, finding your perfect hybrid camera takes some work. If you are just getting into photography, a lower-priced model can be the ideal option to buy.

In the end, buying a camera is a very personal choice. For this reason, be sure to that visit a store and play around with a variety of models to find the best for you. Only then can you make an informed purchase.
